The local supermarket strongly expands its assortment of fresh products.

Tuesday, June 14, 2022

On Thursday 16 June, the renewed Spar Duffel will open its doors. From 16 May, the store closed for a while for thorough renovations. Apart from a fresh look the store will also have a new focus: an even wider assortment of fresh products. Also, two new independent entrepreneurs will run the renewed store: Yannick Van Elst and Sophie Nuyens. Their team starts with 6 fixed co-workers supplemented with student workers for the busy moments.

Focus on an even wider assortment of fresh products

The customers of Spar Duffel will be welcomed in a modern local supermarket with a larger store surface, where the focus will be on an even wider assortment of fresh products. "Our fresh meat and the home-made dishes from our butcher's department are an important addition in the new store", Yannick explains. "Spar Duffel has always been known for its bakery. In the new store as well, we are aiming for the familiar high-quality standard with the CRU bakery in this department."

New store managers continue family tradition

With Yannick and Sophie, Spar Duffel will get two new independent entrepreneurs. At this moment, they manage Spar Koningshooikt together, a real family business that was started as a butchery in 1935 by Yannick's great-grandfather. In 1969, the store was expanded to a grocery store, and in 1981 it became a fully-fledged supermarket. "I started helping out as a student worker when I was 15 and started working in my parents' business after high school", says Yannick. "After that, I attended a butcher's training in evening classes to follow in my grandfather's footsteps and lead the butcher's department of our supermarket." In 2021, Yannick took over his parents' business. 'It is a wonderful new chapter for Sophie and me to now also be able to take over this renewed second supermarket," Yannick says proudly.

Minimal environmental impact

Just like the other Colruyt Group store formats, Spar is firmly committed to building sustainably and with a minimal ecological footprint. The store's cooling system has aCO2 emission that is 90 % lower compared to that of a traditional cooling system.

Langere openingsuren en feestelijke acties rond de opening

From the reopening on, the store will be open longer on Sunday afternoons: customers are welcome until 17h. In addition, there is a festive opening reception on Wednesday from 18 until 21 pm. Everybody is welcome to meet the renewed store and the new independent entrepreneurs Yannick and Sophie. During the opening week, there will be a special brochure with nice discounts and free products to introduce the customers to the renewed assortment.
