Revamped OKay Oostakker reopens as a sustainable neighbourhood supermarket on 27 April

With refurbished freshmart and additional cooling cabinets

Monday, April 25, 2022

On Wednesday 27 April, OKay Oostakker reopens its doors after undergoing a thorough facelift. The local supermarket with a surface of 636 m² has been renovated in the style of the latest generation of OKay stores, with a refurbished freshmart, additional cooling cabinets and a revamped bread corner. Claudia Maes and her team look forward to welcoming their customers.

Focus on fresh products and daily fresh bread

Thanks to the fresh and modern interior, customers of OKay Oostakker can now find their way even more easily in the broad assortment of super fresh products. "In the new freshmart for instance, our broad offer of fresh fruit and vegetables can stand out completely," says Claudia. "We placed extra refrigeration units just outside the freshmart to showcase our tapas, cold sliced meat and pastries even better."

At OKay Oostakker, fresh bread is delivered every day and store co-workers bake off high-quality rolls and pastries on the spot. "They are neatly displayed in our renewed bread units now. Much handier for our customers", Claudia explains.

Top team from the region

All these novelties and improvements will contribute to a more pleasant shopping experience and make shopping even easier. But the biggest asset of OKay Oostakker is undoubtedly the wonderful team of store co-workers. "Every day, I can count on a great team of 13 motivated co-workers," says Claudia. "A top team. All of them people from the region around Oostakker, for whom customer friendliness, good service and helpfulness always come first.”

Easy to reach by car and bicycle

OKay Oostakker has a practical location along a major connecting road, so it is easy to reach for everyone. The car park has room for 54 vehicles and cargo bikes can be put away safely in the bicycle shed.

Minimal environmental impact

Just like the other Colruyt Group store formats, OKay is firmly committed to building sustainably and with a minimal ecological footprint. "At OKay Oostakker, we do not use fossil fuels", says Claudia. "The refrigeration system works on propane, a natural coolant that is much environment-friendlier than chemical coolants. This reduces CO2 emissions by 90% compared to a classic cooling system. On top of that, the heat released by the refrigeration system is recovered to heat the store. Furthermore, the succulents, mosses and grasses on the green roof act as a buffer against the heat on hot summer days."

About OKay

OKay is Colruyt Group’s local supermarket format. Customers can find everything they need there for their daily shopping. OKay stores are set up as near as possible to town or city centres and guarantee the lowest prices in the neighbourhood. The very first OKay store opened its doors in Ertvelde on 14 January 1998. Since then, OKay has been opening an average of 6 new stores every year. The local store chain intends to keep up this frequency in the years to come. OKay has about 140 stores in Belgium today. Since November 2015, the chain also has its own distribution centre at the industrial estate of Lot (Beersel) in Flemish Brabant. OKay currently employs more than 2,500 co-workers.
