Pleasant shopping experience with more focus on fresh
On Thursday 30 May, the Spar Colruyt Group store in Opwijk will be reopening its doors after a thorough renovation. The De Baerdemaeker family has run the store with heart and soul for three generations. The renovation continues in the same vein, with a focus on sustainability, freshness and local produce. Independent entrepreneurs Stijn and Jo De Baerdemaeker are already very much looking forward to welcoming their customers again in their renewed and more sustainable store. "This renovation puts us on a par with the latest generation of Spar stores with a minimal environmental footprint," according to Stijn. "At the same time, we're still the family neighbourhood store where everyone feels welcome and you know you'll get quality products."

Thorough renovation
From 30 May, the rural town of Opwijk will have a completely renewed Spar Colruyt Group store. The trusted Spar Opwijk in the Fabriekstraat 7 will be reopening after more than a month of renovations. "The store has been here since 2000 and was in need of renovation," explains independent entrepreneur Stijn De Baerdemaeker. "The building was completely gutted and renovated from ceiling to floor and the facade was given a new look."
Third generation
Spar Opwijk is a family business with a long history. Today, brothers Stijn and Jo De Baerdemaeker are at the helm. They took over the store from their parents but it was their grandparents who established the store in 1961. "We’ve been in business for three generations," says Stijn proudly. "We've been an established neighbourhood store in the centre of Opwijk for all those years. The butcher's shop, with its own fresh meat and preparations, has been the beating heart of the business since its establishment."
The warmth of the neighbourhood store is also apparent from the loyal team. "We have a permanent team of 13 to 14 employees, familiar faces to our many regular customers."
Nicer shopping experience
The renewed Spar Opwijk follows the concept of the latest generation of Spar Colruyt Group stores, which put a premium on shopping convenience. There's more attention for fresh, local and sustainable. "The layout is totally different," Stijn comments. "The first thing you will smell and see is our renovated bakery. This has been given a special upgrade where craft and authenticity are essential. Our other products have also moved to new aisles. The emphasis is on fresh and high quality." The new floor plan will take some getting used to for customers. "I'm curious too, you know," smiles Stijn. "I can tell you without thinking where the mayonnaise is, for example. With the new layout, that might be a little tricky the first couple of weeks!”
Minimal environmental footprint
Like Colruyt Group’s other store formats, Spar attaches great importance to sustainable construction, ensuring the lowest possible environmental impact. "The cooling system has been renewed and emits no CO2. We now cool with CO2, widely considered as the most environmentally-friendly, sustainable and safe way of cooling at the moment,” Stijn explains. "We also installed solar panels and charging stations in our car park, allowing customers to charge their car when shopping."
Festive reopening
The store will reopen on Thursday 30 May. And the special opening folder in the opening week features some great discounts. On Saturday 1 June there will be a festive reception with snacks and drinks for everyone. "We're a modern neighbourhood store with a heart for our customers. Delicious meat, fresh products and a warm service are guaranteed," Stijn concludes.
