OKay City opens new store in Wondelgemstraat

Open 7 days out of 7

On Wednesday, 13 November, Okay City, the city formula of local supermarket Okay, will open a new branch on Wondelgemstraat. This is the first store in Ghent to operate under the new name ‘Okay City’. The other four stores in Ghent will receive a makeover in the coming days.

Even easier shopping in the city

The new store on Wondelgemstraat also marks the beginning of a new era for the other Okay Compact stores. The city supermarkets of Okay are being renamed Okay City. However, this is more than just a name change.

Just like at Okay, shopping at Okay City is always easy. The city stores are designed to help customers find what they need even faster, all within walking or biking distance from home or work.

Okay City is also mindful of its customers' budgets. The store chain compares prices and promotions of nearby stores daily and adjusts its prices as needed. This way, customers at Okay City benefit not only from exceptional promotions but also from guaranteed low prices, without having to compare prices themselves.

Open 7 days out of 7

In the brand-new Ghent store, which covers nearly 400 m², customers will find everything they need for their daily shopping. From drinks and laundry and household products to a wide selection of fresh products: fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, bread and pastries. You can also stop by Okay City on Wondelgemstraat for a quick coffee, a filled sandwich or a ready-made meal.

'For local residents, we are the ideal stop on the way home. Fresh fruit and vegetables, bread for tomorrow morning, a quick solution for dinner… Everything is available in one place at an affordable price,' says city manager Bart Rötgens.

Bart and his team of six permanent store employees are ready to welcome customers with a smile, even on Sunday mornings.

A heart for the environment

Like the other store formulas within Colruyt Group, Okay City places great importance on sustainable construction, aiming for the lowest possible environmental impact. In the new Okay City store on Wondelgemstraat in Ghent, no gas or fuel oil is used, and the environmentally friendly cooling system emits 90% less CO2 than traditional installations. Additionally, the released heat from the cooling system is recovered to heat the store. Furthermore, the ventilation system recovers 75% of the heat.

Looking towards the future

The opening of this new store perfectly aligns with Colruyt Group’s ambition to offer more relevant shopping formulas in urban environments, where consumers can easily and affordably do their shopping. Meanwhile, there are already 21 Okay Compact stores, all of which will soon be given a new Okay City makeover. This new store brings the total to five in Ghent. The other stores are located in Brussels, Antwerp, Liège, Blankenberge and Halle. Colruyt Group continues to actively search for other suitable locations to further expand its presence in cities.
