Renewed Spar Colruyt Group in Essen-Wildert to open on 19 September

On Thursday 19 September, the Spar store in Essen-Wildert will reopen after a major makeover. Residents from the area will again be able to do their grocery shopping at their familiar neighbourhood store. This store is fully furnished in the style of the latest generation of Spar stores for a more pleasant shopping experience. Store managers Gitte Sanders and Mick Van Campen are looking forward to welcoming their customers.

An established name for 35 years

Spar Essen-Wildert, located on Sint-Jansstraat 51, will reopen on 19 September after undergoing extensive renovations. The store has been a trusted sight in the Wildertwijk community for 35 years. Gitte Sanders and Mick Van Campen have been at the helm of this local supermarket for about six years now. "My parents opened Spar Wildert at the time. Today still, the four of us run the store together," Gitte explains. Last year, the couple opened their second Spar store a few kilometres away, in the Essen-Heikant neighbourhood.

The team at Spar Essen-Wildert has 10 staff members who are all from the Essen area. "One of our members has even been there from the very beginning," Gitte proudly says.

Drastic changes

Gitte, Mick and the Spar team are happy to welcome their customers back to the friendly neighbourhood store after three weeks of renovations. A store that has been given a fresh new look. "We have tried to renew as much as we could without having to close the store, but the store did need a substantial upgrade," Mick says.

With new floors, ceilings, refrigerators, checkouts and even a new entrance, Spar Wildert went all out to provide an even better shopping experience, in line with the latest generation of Spar stores. "Also the car park has been reorganised, with more greenery," Mick continues.

Love of fresh and local

Changes have also been made in terms of shopping convenience. The bakery, which has been enlarged and moved to the front of the store, offers daily fresh bread and on-site risen buns and baguettes.

Spar Essen-Wildert proudly boasts a diverse selection of local products, which includes yoghurt, desserts, ice cream and eggs from local suppliers and producers, and they partner with a newspaper store down the street for their daily and weekly magazines.

Focus on sustainability

Sustainability is a key focus at Spar Colruyt Group. Something Spar Essen-Wildert is also strongly committed to. "We invested in a new, more economical refrigeration unit and a CO₂ plant," Mick explains. Furthermore, they strive for optimal recycling flows.

Grand opening Shopping will not be possible until Thursday but everyone is welcome at the grand opening reception on Wednesday 18 September, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Customers can explore the new store while enjoying snacks and drinks. "And they will have the opportunity to sample products of some of our suppliers, who will also be present", Gitte enthuses. "Also, there is a special opening folder that offers plenty of interesting opening-week offers and fun gadgets."
