Refurbished Okay Gistel reopens on 17 October as a sustainable neighbourhood supermarket
With Assisted Self-Checkout in a renewed checkout area
Tuesday, October 14, 2025
On Friday 17 October, Okay Gistel, located on the Brugsebaan, will reopen its doors after a thorough renovation. The neighbourhood supermarket, with a total retail area of over 600 m², has been redesigned in the style of the latest generation of Okay stores. There are now additional refrigerated units and a new checkout area where customers can easily and quickly pay at the Assisted Self-Checkout. The renovation strongly focused on minimising environmental impact. Store manager Orry Janssens and his team are looking forward to welcoming back their customers.
Focus on fresh products
Thanks to the fresh and modern layout of Okay Gistel, customers can easily find their way around the varied selection of fresh products. “In our freshmart, it’s easy to choose from our wide range of fruit and vegetables, dairy, meat, charcuterie, fish, and ready meals – all fresh daily, just like customers expect from Okay,” says store manager Orry. “Just outside the freshmart, we’ve added extra refrigerated units offering an extended selection of meat, fish and vegetarian snacks – ideal for relaxed aperitif moments with family or friends.”
Revamped bread corner and convenient chest-type freezers
At Okay Gistel, store employees bake quality breads, pastries and rolls several times a day. All of these can be found in the clearly arranged bakery section. “In the frozen section, customers can quickly find their favourite products in energy-efficient freezers with glass lids,” adds Orry. “And our Collect&Go collection point makes shopping even more convenient.”
Paying quickly at the Assisted Self-Checkout
The store's checkout area has also been upgraded to make paying even more convenient. “What’s completely new are the three Assisted Self-Checkout zones,” explains Orry. “Here, customers can scan and pay for their purchases themselves.”
All of these innovations and improvements contribute to a pleasant shopping experience and more efficient grocery shopping. "And every day, a great and motivated team is ready to help our customers. All people who value friendliness, good service and helpfulness above all.”
Minimal environmental impact
Like the other Colruyt Group store formats, Okay is firmly committed to building sustainably and with a minimal ecological footprint. Okay Gistel operates a 100% without fossil fuels – no gas or heating oil is used. The store generates its own energy via solar panels. The car park is paved with water-permeable bricks, allowing rainwater to seep into the soil. The green roof purifies the air and offers more biodiversity.
Easily accessible
Okay Gistel is conveniently located on the Brugsebaan, a wide road close to the village centre – easily reachable for everyone. The spacious and accessible car park offers 54 spaces, including 2 charging points for electric vehicles. There is also ample bicycle parking, with extra space for cargo bikes.
