Okay will also open its doors on Sunday mornings from early 2026

Four months after the intention to open Okay shops on Sunday mornings was announced, the deal is done: from early 2026, customers will also be able to visit Okay for their Sunday shopping, breakfast pastry and pistolets. After constructive discussions with the social partners, an agreement has been reached that takes maximum account of the needs and wishes of the employees. Colruyt Group thus meets the flexibility demanded by customers with an additional supermarket group.

Sunday shopping with respect for customer and employee

In February, market leader and only Belgian retailer Colruyt Group announced its intention to open Okay neighbourhood supermarkets on Sunday mornings, thus meeting this need of Belgians. From early 2026, Okay customers will be able to visit their neighbourhood supermarket on Sundays between 8am and 12.30pm. Besides a more flexible offer for customers, Okay is also taking into account the impact of Sunday opening on staff.

Christophe Dehandschutter, director of Okay: "The social context is evolving and consumer behaviour has changed significantly in recent years. Customers also want more flexible shopping on Sundays. This has an impact on staff. For Colruyt Group as a people-oriented employer, it was essential to consider the perspective of the employee and the importance for the customer together. We are therefore very pleased that, after constructive consultation with the social partners, we have reached a balanced agreement, and we will be able to serve the Okay customer even better from next year."

Full range with focus on fresh products and bread

Okay is Colruyt Group's fully integrated neighbourhood shop with 146 shops and 2,750 employees. As a neighbourhood shop, Okay puts a big focus on accessibility and customers can shop there quickly, cheaply and conveniently. The shops carry a full range of daily groceries, with an extra focus on fresh products. In addition, a wide range of freshly baked bread, pistolets and breakfast pastry characterises Okay.

Christophe Dehandschutter: "Customers shopping on Sunday are mainly looking for bread, pistolets and fresh products for that day or for Monday morning. These are exactly the ranges that Okay focuses on. Okay is therefore Colruyt Group's ideal formula to meet this demand from our customers."

Within Colruyt Group, other formulas have been opening their doors on Sundays for a while now. The 22 Okay City shops, the 3 Okay Directs, the 4 Cru markets and some Comarkt shops are open on Sundays. In addition, most Spar Colruyt Group shops are also open on Sundays. Colruyt Lowest Prices is not normally open on Sundays, but does open shops on the coast and in the Ardennes on Sunday mornings during busy tourist periods.
