OKay Meulebeke reopens on 28 August in a brand-new, sustainable building

On Friday 28 August, OKay Meulebeke reopens its doors after seven months of transformation work. The old building dating from 2005 made way for a new, larger store of 650 m². It allows us to meet our customers' expectations even better. The new local supermarket has a large freshmart, extra chiller cabinets, a new bread corner and freezers with glass lids. The store was also updated ecologically; indeed, OKay Meulebeke does not use fossil fuels.

Focus on fresh products and daily fresh bread

The fresh and modern lay-out allows OKay Meulebeke to serve its customers even better and to play its ultra-fresh products better. "In the new freshmart for instance, our broad supply of fresh fruit and vegetables can stand out completely", says store manager Anja Grymonprez. "Outside the freshmart, we added extra chiller cabinets so that tapas, cold cuts and pastries strike the eye. We receive bread deliveries every day and our store co workers bake off high-quality buns. You can find all this in our new bread corner."

The frozen products department has also been completely revamped. Anja Grymonprez: "We installed freezers with glass covers so our customers can easily find their favourite products."

We expanded the car park to 51 places and placed a charging point for electric cars.  There is room for 14 bicycles at the bike park. It also accommodates carrier cycles to make shopping by bike easier.

Top team from the region

"Through the years, we have gained loyal customers who value our broad range of products, our friendly co-workers and the lowest prices in the neighbourhood. My 11 co workers, all living in the area around Meulebeke, and I want to continue on this line in our renovated store”, the store manager continues.

Store manager Anja and her team took all the necessary corona measures to welcome their customers safely as from Friday 28 August.

Minimum environmental impact

Like the other Colruyt Group Store formats, it is very important to OKay to build sustainably with a minimum ecological footprint. Consequently, it uses as many sustainable techniques and renewable materials as possible in the newest-generation stores. "We do not use fossil fuels at OKay Meulebeke", says Anja Grymonprez. "The refrigeration system works on propane, a natural coolant that is much environment-friendlier than chemical coolants. This reduces CO2 emission by 90% compared to a classic cooling system. And we recover the heat released by this system. We also generate our own energy by means of solar panels."
