As of today, the premium strawberries sold at Colruyt Lowest Prices only come from Coöperatie Hoogstraten. With sales of millions of trays a year, the two companies are thus entering into a strong local cooperation.
Colruyt Group and Coöperatie Hoogstraten have been working together for years, but now Colruyt Lowest Prices chooses the Antwerp partner exclusively for its premium strawberries. In this way they want to focus even more on local anchoring and quality combined with the lowest prices for customers.
Liesbet Mesdom, responsible Purchase of fruits and vegetables at Colruyt Lowest Prices: “As the only Belgian retailer, we offer as many local products as possible in our shops. By working exclusively with Hoogstraten to sell our premium strawberries, their local craftsmanship is available to a wide group of Colruyt customers at the lowest prices.”
In addition to Hoogstraten's strawberries, the stores will also feature strawberries from Boni Selection. Thus, the retailer ensures that strawberries are available in every price segment.
The first crate of Hoogstraten strawberries was auctioned for charity during a festive event, at which Colruyt chose to donate 500 euros per 500 grams to Foodsavers. Those proceeds were doubled by the growers of Coöperatie Hoogstraten, and so 8,000 euros will go to Foodsavers.
Liesbet Mesdom: “Colruyt sells more than 97% of all fresh products each year thanks to efficient stock management, but also wants to use at least 40% of the remaining consumable but unsold products for human or animal consumption. To meet that human consumption, Foodsavers is an ideal partner, which is why we are delighted to donate the proceeds from the auction to them. They distribute the quality food they collect to people in poverty through social organizations such as food distributions and social grocers.”
