Renovated Okay Assenede reopens on 21 May as a sustainable neighbourhood supermarket

With a renewed bread section, refreshed freshmart and now also self-scan checkouts

On Wednesday 21 May, Okay Assenede, located in Trieststraat, will reopen its doors after a thorough renovation. The neighbourhood supermarket, with a total retail surface of 582 m², has been refurbished in the style of the newest generation of Okay stores, featuring a renewed bread section, a refreshed freshmart and a redesigned checkout area, where customers can now also pay quickly and easily at the self-scan checkouts. The renovation also strongly focused on minimising environmental impact. Store manager Charléne Hebberecht and her team are looking forward to welcoming their customers again.

Focus on fresh products and daily fresh bread

Thanks to the fresh and modern layout of Okay Assenede, customers can more easily find their way around the varied assortment of fresh products. “In the refreshed freshmart, it’s easy to choose from our wide selection of fruit and vegetables, dairy, meat, charcuterie, fish and ready-made meals – fresh every day, just like you expect from Okay,” says store manager Charléne. “Just outside the freshmart, we’ve also placed extra cooling cabinets, filled with an extensive assortment of meat, fish and veggie snacks for cosy apero moments with family or friends.”

At Okay Assenede, store co-workers bake high-quality bread, pastries and buns several times a day. These are all neatly arranged in the renewed, and well-organised bread section. "Also in the frozen food department, customers find their favourite products in no time thanks to the energy-efficient chest-type freezers with glass lids. The checkout area has also been updated so that payment goes even more smoothly. Completely new are the 3 self-scan checkouts, where our customers can quickly and easily pay for their groceries,” Charléne explains.

All these novelties and improvements contribute to a more pleasant shopping experience and make shopping even more efficient. “And every day, a great team of 15 motivated co-workers is ready to help our customers. All of them local people, for whom customer friendliness, good service and helpfulness always come first.

Minimal environmental impact

Like the other Colruyt Group store formats, Okay is firmly committed to building sustainably and with a minimal ecological footprint. Okay Assenede uses no gas or fuel oil – the store runs entirely on green electricity. The store’s environmentally friendly cooling system emits 90% less CO2 than traditional installations, and heat released by both the refrigeration and ventilation systems is recovered to heat the store. The exterior façade was refreshed with special paint that, under the influence of sunlight, transforms harmful substances in the air into nitrates and oxygen. When it rains, the nitrates dissolve.

Easily accessible by car and bike

Okay Assenede is conveniently located on Trieststraat, a smooth connecting road between Zelzate and Assenede’s town centre: easily accessible for everyone. The spacious and easily accessible car park provides space for 51 cars, including 4 charging points for electric vehicles. Cargo bikes can also be safely secured in the bike shed.
