Spar Colruyt Group opens brand-new Spar Essen Heikant on 4 November

The new Spar store in Heikant (Essen) opens its doors on Friday 4 November. The store, close to the Dutch border, is completely designed in the style of the newest generation Spar stores that focus on sustainable, fresh and local. Store managers Gitte Sanders and Mick Van Campen are already looking forward to welcoming their customers every day.

New family challenge

The story of Spar Heikant begins at the other side of the municipality Essen, in the neighbourhood Wildert. There, Gitte Sanders and Mick Van Campen have been operating another Spar store for about six years. "The parents of Gitte have started up Spar Wildert more than 30 years ago. The store has been in our family for quite a while and we still work there together with the four of us", Mick explains.

When the opportunity arose to open a second store 4 kilometres further, the choice was made quickly. "In the past, we had already thought a lot about opening a second store. So, this was the perfect opportunity for us and a step we are taking with confidence." The new Spar store of Mick and Gitte is located in the neighbourhood Heikant and also at just a few kilometres from the Dutch border. ​ The team has about ten experienced and loyal co-workers, who are ready every day to welcome customers personally and help them with a smile.

A local supermarket for everyone

Just like the other Spar stores, they attach a lot of importance to tasty and fresh products in Heikant. The 600 m² store surface will be filled by, among other things, a bakery with on-site risen buns and baguettes. In addition, customers can go there 7/7 for a large offer of fresh meat and fish products, a spacious vegetable and fruit department and a broad assortment of sliced cold meat and cheese. "We try to be a local supermarket where people are always greeted with a smile, with products customers keep coming back for", Gitte explains.

Environmental awareness first

At Spar Heikant, environmental awareness is put on the forefront. For example, a CO2 storage is provided and the store also has a system for heat recovery. There also are solar panels on the building that will provide green energy. A large part of the rain water is captured in a wadi, a shallow water basin, where the water can seep into the soil. This also relieves the sewer system.

Festive opening

On Thursday 3 November, Spar Heikant will organise a festive opening reception from 6 to 9 pm. Customers are welcome to get acquainted with the new store and to enjoy a bite to eat and a drink. Thanks to the special opening folder, there are also lots of great discounts in the opening week.
