On Wednesday 28 March, the renovated Colruyt store in Tongeren will open its doors again after a few months of renovation work. The store has been expanded by half its original size and restyled into a new-generation Colruyt store. Moreover, during the work, important archaeological finds were dug up. "It makes this store extra special to us", says store manager Kris Croux.

A house, two ovens and a sword

That Gallo-Roman treasures are dug up in Tongeren is not new. When the store was built in 2006, archaeologists also found Roman and medieval remainders. Store manager Kris Croux: "And it happened again now! A Roman sword, rubbish pits, a stone basement, cups, plates and bowls, lots of shards and coins, remainders of a wooden house, etc. But the most important find was two kilns. They are in extraordinary good shape and proof that the Romans in Tongeren made pottery." Since many customers are curious about the finds, the best ones are displayed in the store. "The excavations have cost us time and money, but we are very proud of our finds and of our new store", says the store manager.

Expanded by half

Colruyt Tongeren has been reorganised to become a new-generation Colruyt store. "It allows our customers to shop even more efficiently and pleasantly", says store manager Kris Croux. "We have expanded the store to 1,600 m2. Customers can find a broader range of products in almost all departments."

Brand-new butcher's department

Customers can choose their fresh quality meat in the self-service butcher's counters. Head butcher Filip Renaerts: "The butchers cut the fresh meat on the spot. Customers can see the butchers at work in an open workshop and talk to them if they have questions or a special order. In the new butcher's department, customers also have a nice overview of the range of meat, cold cuts and salads."

The store has an aboveground and an underground car park. Customers can choose the moving walkway or the lift to reach the store from level -1.

Collect&Go shops for the customer

Colruyt Tongeren now also has a Collect&Go pick-up point. “Collect&Go is a handy Colruyt Group service where we shop for the customers", says the store manager. "They send their shopping list to collectandgo.be or via the app, and the Collect&Go employees have their products ready at the pick-up point on the day and time of their choice.”

Special open evening

Store manager Kris Croux, head butcher Filip Renaerts and their 34 co-workers are looking forward to welcoming their customers at the revamped Colruyt Tongeren on Wednesday 28 June.
Kris Croux: "The evening before, on Tuesday 27 March from 5 to 8 pm, everyone is invited for a store preview. During this special open evening, attended by mayor Patrick Dewael, we will gladly offer our customers a snack and a drink. Everyone is most welcome!"
