Renewed Spar Koningshooikt reopens on 20 February

A more enjoyable shopping experience in a thoroughly revamped supermarket

On Thursday, 20 February, the Spar Colruyt Group store in Koningshooikt will reopen its doors. The cosy neighbourhood supermarket underwent a complete transformation over the past three weeks and now belongs to the latest generation of Spar stores. Freshness and sustainability are key here.Entrepreneurs Yannick Van Elst, Sophie Nuyens, and their team are ready to welcome their customers back to the store.

Need for renewal

On Thursday, 20 February, the moment has arrived. Spar Colruyt Group in Koningshooikt will reopen its doors. The store in Dorpsstraat was given a makeover over the past three weeks, so customers can now enjoy an even more pleasant shopping experience. “The flooring, in particular, needed renewing,” explain entrepreneurs Yannick Van Elst and Sophie Nuyens. “We also run a Spar store in Duffel that has already been renovated to a more modern concept, so we were familiar with the benefits.” Additionally, the façade was updated, giving Spar Koningshooikt a refreshed look from the outside as well.

A family business since 1935

The team at Spar Koningshooikt consists of five local employees, supported by flexible workers and students. They too are eager to start this new chapter of their Spar story. At the helm are Yannick Van Elst and Sophie Nuyens. Spar Koningshooikt is a true family business that was started in 1935 by Yannick’s great-grandfather as a butcher’s shop. In 1969, the store expanded into a grocery shop, and in 1981, it became a fully-fledged supermarket.

“I started helping out as a student at the age of 15 and joined my parents’ business after secondary school,” says Yannick. “I then took evening classes to train as a butcher and follow in my grandfather’s footsteps to lead the butcher’s shop in our supermarket.” Yannick took over the business in 2021.

Delicious and fresh food

“We noticed that the new Spar concept was a success in the Duffel store. We are therefore confident it will work in Koningshooikt as well,” Yannick explains. The concept places even more emphasis on delicious and fresh products. The refreshed bakery also plays an important role in the store. “Our customers will discover a completely renewed Spar,” the entrepreneurs proudly say.

Sustainability as a priority

Like the other store formats within Colruyt Group, Spar attaches great importance to sustainable construction with minimal environmental impact. Spar Koningshooikt is no exception. “All our refrigeration units were replaced. We opted for a sustainable CO₂ refrigeration system,” Yannick explains.

Reopening promotions

Various promotions will take place during the reopening weekend, offering many free products. Customers can win a fully stocked shopping trolley over a two-week period. On Saturday 22 February, Yannick and Sophie will treat their customers to stew and chips.
