Auderghem: a larger Colruyt shop which fits in perfectly with its environment
After a few months of major works, the Auderghem Colruyt shop on Boulevard du Triomphe is reopening on Wednesday 16 September. The supermarket was successfully renovated and enlarged by 400 m², despite the Anciennes Glacières Royales listed site very near and students living in rooms above the shop. Another important point is that, for the shop’s renovation, Colruyt placed great importance on sustainability.

2,300 m² for shopping as if you were on roller skates
The renovated Auderghem shop now extends over 2,300 m², a quarter more surface area than the previous shop floor. Manager Stijn Wouters has the following to say: ‘A larger shop means a wider range, such as in the refrigerated aisle and frozen department. The aisles are wider for more convenience and 15 checkouts provide a free flow for our customers.’
Head butcher Olivier Quarin adds: ‘Customers can find fresh meat at the brand-new self-service butcher’s counter. They see our butchers at work in an open workshop, which makes contact easier if they are placing a special order or asking for information.’
The manager: ‘To reduce the disruption from the work as much as possible, we started by the external developments. The shop could therefore stay open, but was cut off from one car park level. We took advantage of our site’s extra square metres to connect the two car park levels. I’m very pleased to be able to welcome our customers back to this renovated shop!’
Enlargement and preserved heritage
The enlargement of the Auderghem Colruyt is part of a general neighbourhood development project concerning the sites along the Chaussée de Wavre towards Boulevard Louis Schmidt. The major challenge for Colruyt was not to damage the very nearby underground Anciennes Glacières Royales site, which has been listed since 1993. These icehouses, the property of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, were rediscovered at the beginning of the ’80s when the university was established on the military exercise ground site.
Hats off to the students
The Auderghem Colruyt shop is located partly under the university’s student rooms. ‘We would like to thank V.U.B. and the students for their cooperation, among other things, because of the noise that the students had to tolerate during the exam period,’, explains the manager.
A green roof
For the renovation of its Auderghem shop, Colruyt made several sustainable choices, particularly the planting of vegetation on the shop’s roof. Mosses, perennials and grasses provide good insulation and are an indisputable asset for more biodiversity in the town. These plants also have the specific property to purify the air.
