Following Bergen, Charleroi, Braine-l'Alleud, Huy, Jambes, Nivelles and Verviers, the store in Liège is the eighth Bio-Planet shop in Wallonia and the second store in the province of Liège. “Every year, we open two or three new stores in Wallonia,” says Fabrice Gobbato, general manager of Bio-Planet. "Liège is an important region for us. We have noticed a great deal of interest among consumers, so we opened a second store in the province." The new supermarket is located at the intersection of Rue Bernimolin and Boulevard Frankignoul, close to the city centre and Médiacité shopping centre. On 19 September, a brand new Colruyt Group Academy will open in the building next door. The Academy in Liège is currently located in the Hotel Park Inn by Radisson at the airport, and will move to the city centre in mid-September. The first workshops will take place on 21 September.
Bio-Planet Liège has a retail area of 650 m², where customers can find the complete range of around 6,000 food and non-food products. Bio-Planet offers everything that can be found in a supermarket, but everything is 100% sustainable. Customers will find a complete range of healthy, environmentally-friendly, organic, fair trade and local products. Our range of meats, cheeses and vegetarian products are sliced, prepared and packaged in suitable portions, on-site by our own in-house experts and are available from the self-service display. Bio-Planet also offers a wide range of options for people with food intolerances and a plant-based range for flexitarians, vegetarians and vegans. The 12 Bio-Planet employees in Liège are always on hand to give advice or to help with any specific wishes of the customer. "Bio-Planet is also committed to zero waste. For example, the organic food waste produced by our suppliers consisting of bread, cheese and vegetable juices are reused as animal feed. And we consciously opt for sustainable packaging that can be recycled," says Fabrice Gobbato.
The store in Liège is 100% fossil-fuel free: no natural gas or fuel oil is used to heat the store. The store is heated by means of the residual heat from the cooling installation. Other environmentally-friendly technologies have also been used. “The fresh produce department and the service counter are cooled by a propane cooling system. This system emits 90% less greenhouse gases than synthetic refrigerants throughout its lifetime,” explains Fabrice Gobbato. “The ventilation system also recovers 75% of the available heat in the air. By continuously measuring the air quality, we can quickly adjust the air flow, which means that we lose 30% less energy. And an air curtain at the entrance keeps out the cold air. As a result, we have succeeded in making our entire store 100% fossil-fuel free."
The electricity is 100% green and is supplied by Eoly, the sustainable energy specialist within Colruyt Group. Using skylights in the roof maximises the available daylight, while the LED lighting provides 30% less energy consumption. There is also a buffer for rainwater to ensure optimal recovery and reuse, for example for the toilets. The green roof and facade boost biodiversity. And in the car park there is a charging station for electric cars and a charging point for electric bikes.
Bio-Planet invites the residents of Liège to a grand opening reception in the new Bio-Planet store on Tuesday, 18 June from 6 pm onwards. The store will be open for shopping on Wednesday, 19 June. The opening times of Bio-Planet Liège will be Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 7.30 pm. On Fridays, the store will be open until 8 pm.
